Choose a Task
You commit to a period of time during which you work nonstop on a chosen task. The task could be:
- Read chapter three of my sociology book.
- Collect citations on my paper.
- Prepare for question 1 on exam paper.
After the set time period you can take a break. After the break you can choose to do another ‘pomodoro’ if you wish. The Pomodoro technique recommends you do four ‘pomodoros’ in a row before taking a longer break.
Minimize distractions

- Choose an isolated area to study – ideally somewhere you won’t be interrupted by your friends.

The key to using the pomodoro technique effectively is to shrink the amount of time until you no longer feel resistance to it. The ‘official’ length of time for a pomdoro is 25 minutes, but if the thought of spending 25 minutes working on your chemistry equations makes you want to cry, shrink the amount of time until it’s something palatable to you. If this is 5 minutes, so be it. The important thing is to start making progress. Once you have become used to the process you can slowly increase the amount of time spent in each pomodoro.
